South Africa’s SACP seeks left-wing unity as ANC boycotts conference

SA Communist Party (SACP) has launched a major push to unite left-wing forces, bringing political parties, trade unions and civil society groups together for a three-day conference aimed at tackling the country’s deepening economic crisis.

The conference of the Left, being held in Boksburg from May 29 to 31, comes as unemployment, poverty, inequality and the cost of living continue to place pressure on millions of South Africans.

Leaders from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), MK Party (MKP), Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), AZAPO and other organisations are attending the gathering.

Delegates are discussing plans to build a united Left Popular Front focused on economic transformation, job creation, land reform and public ownership of key industries.

The conference also highlights growing political divisions following the African National Congress’s decision to govern alongside the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

The SACP has strongly opposed the GNU and is preparing to contest future local government elections independently.

One of the conference’s biggest talking points is the ANC’s absence.

ANC secretary-general (SG) Fikile Mbalula dismissed the gathering, saying there was “nothing leftist” about it.

The SACP responded sharply, accusing ANC leaders of turning their backs on progressive forces at a time when South Africa faces serious economic and social challenges.
