South Africans looking to expand their viewing choices beyond the overhyped and underwhelming international offerings on Netflix now have a local option – without having to even pay a subscription fee.

Afree TV, a free streaming platform dedicated entirely to African storytelling, officially launched at the end of April 2026, offering films, series, live television, and radio content.

The platform is powered by South Africa’s national signal distributor, Sentech’s Freevision Play over-the-top (OTT) architecture.

“Afree TV is more than a streaming service. It is a continental collaboration bringing together African broadcasters and content owners to amplify the continent’s stories on a global stage,” Sentech said at the launch.

Unlike Netflix, Disney+, or other international platforms heavy on Hollywood programming, Afree TV leans toward African-made productions and regional storytelling. Sentech described the launch as “a defining moment for the African media industry”, saying the service is “designed to dismantle traditional distribution barriers and make African content accessible to audiences worldwide, not just on the continent”.

It’s about time that unique African productions step into the limelight; one can only stomach so many reboots starring Sydney Sweeney and Mark Wahlberg.

Afree TV operates as a FAST service (free, ad-supported streaming television), meaning there are no monthly fees, though viewers will still encounter some advertisements during playback. The platform launched with four live television networks: LN247, SportsCast Africa, Homebase, and Millennium TV, with the expectation that its content library will expand over time.

The launch of Afree TV adds another player to an already over-competitive streaming market in South Africa. The service joins at least eleven other free digital platforms available locally, including the SABC’s SABC+, eMedia’s eVOD, Viu, cAfrica.tv, and the free tier of MultiChoice’s DStv Stream.

Offerings from these services have significantly reshaped South Africa’s media landscape, giving viewers without traditional television sets access to a wide range of entertainment on mobile devices and computers, depending on whether they have access to the internet.

It is still early days for Afree TV, and its initial lineup is relatively modest. But as a free, Africa-first platform backed by a major infrastructure provider, it represents a big step toward making homegrown African content more accessible to both local and global audiences. Hollywood should not have a monopoly on great storytelling.
