Rapid medical evacuation remains a critical component of emergency response, enabling timely access to specialized treatment and significantly improving survival outcomes during disasters and mass casualty incidents. In moments where every second counts, the ability to swiftly stabilize and transfer casualties plays a vital role in saving lives and reducing the severity of injuries.

Following the tragic fire incident at Utumishi Girls High School in Gilgil, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) activated emergency response measures to support rescue and medical evacuation efforts. Kenya Air Force helicopters were swiftly deployed to airlift injured students to specialized medical facilities for advanced treatment and urgent care.

The emergency operation underscored the importance of air mobility capabilities in humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations, particularly during incidents requiring rapid intervention and coordinated casualty management.

The evacuations were conducted through close collaboration between the KDF, medical personnel, disaster response agencies, school administration and other security agencies to ensure the safe stabilization, handling and transfer of the affected victims.

The mission further demonstrated the KDF’s operational readiness, responsiveness and commitment to supporting national emergency response efforts during times of crisis.

The Kenya Defence Forces conveys its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and the entire Utumishi Girls High School fraternity following the tragic loss of the young girls.
