A sombre atmosphere descended on Ohwim in the Ashanti Region as hundreds of mourners gathered on Saturday, May 30, to pay their final respects to the late Andrews Kwame Amankwah, father-in-law of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi.
The Vice President, Prof. Jane Opuoku-Agyemang, First Lady, Lordina Mahama, and leading figures of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), government officials, family members, friends, and sympathisers joined Mr. Gyamfi and the bereaved family for the final funeral rites of the deceased.
The late Mr. Amankwah, who reportedly lost his life following a robbery attack, was remembered as a peaceful and humble man who lived harmoniously with his family, neighbours, and members of the community.
In moving tributes, his wife, children, relatives, and sons-in-law described him as a pillar of strength whose guidance, love, and commitment to family left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
They also recounted the painful circumstances surrounding the robbery incident that claimed his life.
A memorial church service drew dignitaries from across the political divide, members of the media fraternity, sympathisers, and members of the public, all united in grief as they honoured the memory of the deceased and offered support to the family.
Among other dignitaries present were the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Baba Sadiq, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria; Shamima Muslim, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson; Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Sammy Awuku, MP for Akuapem North, Prof. Joshua Alabi, Board Chair, GCB Bank, NDC National Chairman, and Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.
Other dignitaries include: New Patriotic Party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, Henry Nana Boakye, NPP National Organiser, 2024 general elections ruling mate of NPP, Dr Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Bernard Mornah, PNC members, Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong,
Nana Kwame Bediako, Leader of New Force, Ibrahim Mahama, Founder of Engineers and Planners, Agric Minister, Eric Opoku, Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah.
Andrew Amankwa was shot during a robbery attack at the Ohwim Tigo Junction in Kumasi on Friday, February 13. Despite intensive medical care, he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
Following the incident, four suspects were arrested through a coordinated operation involving the Police Intelligence Directorate, the Anti-Robbery Unit, and the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement teams.
Media reports circulating on April 27, 2026, alleged that the suspects had broken out of custody.
However, police sources have dismissed these claims, stating that all suspects remain in custody while judicial proceedings continue.
