A police operation along the Accra-Cape Coast highway has led to the arrest of a driver after officers discovered 14 boxes of shotgun ammunition being transported in a toyota Voxy Vehicle without the required documentation.
The suspect, identified as Francis Ampomah, was intercepted during a snap checkpoint exercise conducted by police officers in the Apam area of the Central Region.
The vehicle, a Toyota Voxy with registration number GT 9748-26, was reportedly travelling from Accra towards Assin Fosu when officers stopped it for inspection in the early hours of Wednesday, May 27.
Police sources say the driver was unable to provide documentation authorising the transportation of the items.
Following the discovery, the vehicle and the ammunition were escorted to the Apam Police Station for further examination and investigation.
The suspect has since been taken into custody and is assisting police with inquiries into the ownership, origin and intended destination of the ammunition.
Meanwhile, the seized exhibits remain in police custody as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the transportation of the ammunition and whether any offences may have been committed.
