NHIA Orders Health Insurance Cover For Ride-Hailing, Logistics Workers

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has directed ride-hailing and logistics companies operating in Nigeria to provide health insurance coverage for their workers, including drivers and riders.

The directive is part of ongoing efforts to expand access to healthcare coverage under the national health insurance framework and ensure that workers in the gig economy are not excluded from essential medical protection.

According to the NHIA, companies in the transport and logistics sector are expected to enrol their workers into accredited health insurance plans to guarantee access to affordable healthcare services.

The move is aimed at strengthening universal health coverage and reducing the financial burden of medical expenses on informal and semi-formal sector workers, who make up a significant portion of Nigeria’s urban workforce.

Ride-hailing and logistics platforms are now expected to comply with the directive by integrating health insurance packages into their employment or engagement structures for drivers and delivery personnel.

The NHIA emphasized that the policy is designed to promote workplace welfare and ensure that all categories of workers benefit from structured healthcare support.

Stakeholders in the transport and digital economy sectors are expected to engage further with the NHIA on implementation guidelines and compliance timelines.
