NPP to petition CJ over “misconduct” of Circuit Court judge

The opposition New Patriotic Party has announced plans to petition Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on Friday, May 22, over what it describes as misconduct on the part of the judge who presided over Circuit Court 9 in the case involving the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

The party says the decision follows what it considers unfair treatment of Abronye during the legal proceedings, particularly his remand into custody over the past nine days. The NPP argues that the circumstances surrounding the case warranted bail from the onset and not detention.

Addressing the media after court proceedings on Wednesday, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, disclosed that the NPP would formally petition the Chief Justice to investigate what it believes was misconduct on the part of the judge.

His comments came after the court granted Abronye bail in the sum of GHS100,000 with two sureties following days of legal arguments over his detention.

According to the NPP, Abronye’s remand was unjustified and amounted to an abuse of judicial discretion. The party further alleged that the judge’s conduct throughout the proceedings appeared prejudicial and unfair towards the outspoken politician.

Party officials insist Abronye should not have spent nine days in custody, maintaining that the handling of the case raises concerns about fairness and impartiality in the judicial process.

Abronye is currently standing trial on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news. The charges are linked to comments he allegedly made against a Circuit Court judge in a viral social media video.

The case has since generated significant political debate, with the NPP accusing state institutions of targeting some of its leading members, while prosecutors maintain that the matter is strictly a criminal case before the court.
