Renowned South African artist Portchie passes away at 62

South Africa’s art community is mourning the loss of well-known artist Portchie, born Jan Hendrik Viljoen, who has died at the age of 62.

Portchie was known for his vibrant paintings filled with joy, warmth and optimism.

Over the decades, he built a career around celebrating life’s simple pleasures.

His distinctive style, characterised by bold colours, playful scenes and his trademark blue trees, made his work instantly recognisable and earned him a loyal following both locally and abroad.

A family member shared news of his passing on social media, describing him as a man whose faith, kindness, passion for life and artistic talent touched countless people.

Tributes have also since begun pouring in from friends, art collectors and admirers who remember not only the artist but the generous spirit behind the paintings.

Born in the Free State and later based in Stellenbosch, Portchie was largely self-taught. What began as a hobby in the early 1990s evolved into a remarkable artistic career spanning decades. His work appeared in galleries around the world, while thousands of paintings found homes in private and corporate collections.

Despite his success, Portchie’s art remained rooted in a simple philosophy: celebrating beauty, happiness and human connection. Whether depicting children at play, flower sellers, cyclists or countryside scenes, his paintings offered viewers a reminder to find joy in everyday moments.

Details regarding memorial arrangements have not yet been announced.
