Ghana’s robotics team won first place in the game category at the 2026 Robofest World Championships, and the government is using the moment to push robotics education nationwide.

Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George received the team at the ministry in Accra after they returned from Michigan, USA, where they topped the game category at the annual Robofest competition. The 2026 challenge, themed “Building Bridges,” required teams to design and program a fully autonomous robot that simulates how construction machinery moves and positions materials on a bridge site, testing precision, navigation, object manipulation and analytical thinking.

“This is a national success. We all benefited from the nation’s institutions’ success,” the minister said.

George announced that the ministry will partner with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to launch a robotics summer boot camp in July, with funding being sought to bring the programme to schools in disadvantaged communities. He framed robotics as a constructive alternative to passive screen use and a vehicle for directing young people toward solving real national problems.

He told the students that sustaining excellence required more effort than achieving it, urging them to maintain the habits that brought them to first place. The government, he added, would continue to back hackathons, cybersecurity competitions and other initiatives designed to build a pool of skilled young technologists, while calling on parents and communities to support young innovators in their circles.

Ghana’s win places its student engineers at the top of a global field. The government now wants to build on the title rather than simply celebrate it.
