The Government of Ghana has commenced the repatriation of 327 Ghanaian nationals stranded in Côte d’Ivoire following a demolition exercise carried out by authorities in the Port Bouët Municipality of Abidjan.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, June 12, 2026, the affected Ghanaians were displaced after the demolition exercise destroyed homes and livelihoods in the area where they had been residing.
The Ministry disclosed that the government has already facilitated the return of 228 Ghanaian nationals, who arrived safely in Ghana on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
Arrangements have also been completed for the remaining 99 individuals to return home on Friday, June 12.
The repatriation exercise forms part of efforts by the Government of Ghana to provide immediate assistance to citizens affected by the situation and ensure their safe return and reintegration into society.
In the statement, the Ministry explained that all 327 Ghanaians had been living in communities impacted by the demolition operation and subsequently found themselves stranded after losing their sources of livelihood and lacking the resources needed to secure alternative accommodation in Côte d’Ivoire.
Beyond the repatriation effort, Ghana is also pursuing compensation for those affected by the demolition exercise.
“The Ministry further wishes to acknowledge that Ivorian authorities have expressed their desire to compensate the victims of their demolition exercise and shall therefore remain actively engaged on the matter to ensure that the promised compensation is received by our affected nationals. To this effect, Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan will continue to carry out the much needed coordination.”
As a result, the Government of Ghana intends to remain actively engaged with its counterparts in Côte d’Ivoire to ensure that the promised compensation is delivered to affected Ghanaian nationals.
The statement indicated that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan will continue to coordinate efforts and engage relevant stakeholders to facilitate the compensation process and address any outstanding concerns relating to the welfare of the affected citizens.
