While Nigeria’s most successful businessmen often command the spotlight for their wealth, influence and corporate achievements, many have had remarkable women standing beside them through the journey. From boardrooms and businesses to philanthropy and family building, these women have played critical roles in shaping some of the country’s most powerful business dynasties. OGHENOVO EGODO-MICHAEL takes a look at the women beside Nigeria’s business titans
Nana Otedola

For more than three decades, Nana Otedola has been a constant presence behind one of Nigeria’s most influential business families. Married to billionaire businessman and Chairman of First HoldCo Plc, Femi Otedola, she has helped build not only a successful family but also a legacy rooted in entrepreneurship, discipline, and philanthropy.
Though often recognised as the wife of one of Africa’s most celebrated businessmen, Nana’s story extends far beyond that title. Born Nana Fatima Attah and originally from Kogi State, she has largely maintained a private life, choosing substance over publicity. Yet, those familiar with the Otedola family’s journey often describe her as the foundation upon which much of their success rests.
Since marrying Femi in 1992, Nana has stood beside him through the challenges and triumphs that accompanied the growth of his business empire. Long before luxury yachts, private jets, and boardroom influence became associated with the Otedola name, she was helping to create the stable home environment that allowed her husband to pursue his ambitions.
Femi himself has publicly acknowledged her sacrifices over the years. During the wedding celebration of their daughter, Temi, to singer and entrepreneur Mr Eazi in 2025, he paid an emotional tribute to his wife, crediting her for ensuring their children were loved, nurtured, and properly raised while he focused on building his businesses.
The results of that commitment are evident in their children. Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has built a successful career in entertainment and philanthropy, while Temi has established herself as an actress, fashion influencer and entrepreneur.
However, while supporting her family, Nana was also building a successful enterprise of her own. In 1999, she founded Garment Care Limited, a premium laundry and dry-cleaning company that has grown into one of the most respected brands in the industry. In a TikTok vlog in 2023, Temi praised her mum’s business achievements praising her as a boss that gave birth to a boss. “A boss gave birth to a boss. We love to see it,” she had said.
Away from business, Nana is also known for her philanthropic efforts, supporting causes focused on healthcare, education and community development. Despite her considerable influence, she remains private and rarely seeks attention for either her charitable work or personal achievements.
Awele Elumelu

For decades, billionaire investor and philanthropist, Tony Elumelu, has been one of the most influential voices in African business. Behind many of the initiatives that have transformed lives across the continent, however, stands a partner who is not merely supportive of the vision but actively helping to shape it.
Dr Awele Elumelu is far more than the wife of the chairman of Heirs Holdings and United Bank for Africa. She is a physician, healthcare entrepreneur, philanthropist and corporate leader whose impact spans medicine, business and social development. Together, she and her husband have built one of Africa’s most influential partnerships, united by a shared commitment to creating opportunities and improving lives.
Unlike many spouses of high-profile businessmen who operate largely in the background, Dr Awele works closely with her husband across several initiatives, particularly through the Tony Elumelu Foundation. As co-founder of the foundation, she has played a significant role in advancing its mission of empowering African entrepreneurs with funding, mentorship and business training. Over the years, the foundation has supported thousands of young entrepreneurs across all 54 African countries, helping to turn ideas into thriving businesses and creating jobs in the process.
Their professional partnership is rooted in a common belief that Africa’s future will be driven by Africans themselves. While Tony often speaks publicly about Africapitalism and the power of entrepreneurship, Awele has helped translate that vision into programmes that deliver tangible impact across communities. In a recent publication on Tony Elumelu’s website, he expressed that he is honoured to be named alongside Awele on the TIME100 Philanthropy list for the transformative work of the foundation across Africa.
Away from philanthropy, she has built an impressive career in healthcare. Trained as a medical doctor, she studied medicine at the University of Benin before practising in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Her years in clinical medicine exposed her to the realities of healthcare delivery and inspired her desire to create broader, more sustainable solutions.
Today, she serves as Chairperson of Avon Healthcare Limited and Avon Medical Practice, organisations that have become key players in Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Through these institutions, she has championed improved access to quality healthcare and has remained a strong advocate for preventive care, maternal health and better health outcomes for underserved populations.
Her influence extends beyond Nigeria. She has worked with international organisations focused on immunisation, healthcare access and women’s development, earning recognition as a respected voice in global health conversations. In 2023, she was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic in recognition of her contributions to healthcare and national development.
Despite their demanding schedules, the Elumelus have often spoken about the importance of family and finding time for each other. Whether attending high profile events, celebrating milestones with friends or travelling together, they project the image of a couple that genuinely enjoys each other’s company. Many also look forward to their coordinated appearance at the annual end of the year party organised by the United Bank for Africa.
Shade Okoya

As Managing Director of Eleganza Industrial City, Shade Okoya occupies a position that places her at the heart of one of Nigeria’s largest manufacturing enterprises. From overseeing operations to supporting strategic decisions that keep the company competitive, she has become an integral part of the business her husband, Rasaq Okoya spent decades building.
Over the years, her husband has openly acknowledged the important role she plays within both the family and the business. What began as a marriage in 1999 gradually evolved into a partnership where mentorship, trust and shared responsibility became defining features. While the billionaire industrialist laid the foundation of the empire, Shade emerged as one of the executives helping to position it for a new generation.
Her rise within the company reflects years of learning and preparation. In several interviews, she has credited her husband for exposing her to the intricacies of business and grooming her for leadership responsibilities. That mentorship has translated into real influence within the organisation, where she now oversees aspects of a manufacturing operation that produces a wide range of consumer goods for the Nigerian market.
Yet, reducing Shade’s story to corporate leadership alone would fail to capture the full scope of her influence.
Over the years, she has become one of the most visible faces among Nigeria’s elite businesswomen, admired for her ability to balance executive responsibilities with family life and public engagements. Her presence at major social events, cultural gatherings and business functions has helped cement her reputation as a woman who combines sophistication with substance.
Beyond the boardroom, her fashion choices regularly attract attention, making her one of the country’s most celebrated style figures. However, beneath the glamour lies a woman who understands the demands of leadership and the discipline required to sustain success.
Her commitment to social impact is equally noteworthy.
Family remains central to her identity. Together, she and Chief Okoya have built a home that has endured for more than two decades, raising four children while navigating the pressures that often accompany wealth and public visibility. Despite persistent public fascination with the age difference between them, the couple has repeatedly pointed to mutual respect, understanding and shared values as the foundation of their marriage.
What makes Shade particularly compelling is her evolution. Over the years, she has transformed from a young bride entering one of Nigeria’s most prominent business families into a respected executive with influence extending beyond her husband’s legacy. Her journey demonstrates how mentorship, opportunity and determination can combine to produce effective leadership.
As one of the women behind Nigeria’s most successful businessmen, Shade Okoya represents a model of partnership that goes beyond emotional support. Through her contributions to the Eleganza empire, her philanthropic initiatives and her growing influence in business circles, she has established herself as a force in her own right.
Kay Ovia

When Jim Ovia founded Zenith Bank in 1990, few could have predicted that it would grow into one of Africa’s most respected financial institutions. Five years later, he established Cyberspace Limited, a technology company created to support the growing demand for digital solutions in banking and other sectors. Today, helping to steer that vision into the future is his wife, Kay Ovia, who serves as Chairman of the company.
While many know Jim as a banking pioneer, fewer are familiar with the woman who has played a significant role in advancing one of the businesses that complemented and strengthened Nigeria’s digital transformation. As Chairman of Cyberspace Limited, Kay oversees a company that has spent decades providing technology solutions to financial institutions, telecommunications companies and government agencies at a time when digital innovation has become essential to economic growth.
Her position is not merely ceremonial. Over the years, she has built a reputation as a respected technology and business leader, helping to drive strategic growth within a company that emerged during the early days of Nigeria’s technology revolution.
For Kay, leadership extends far beyond one boardroom.
With an MBA in Management, she has steadily built an impressive career spanning technology, finance and investment management. In addition to her role at Cyberspace, she serves as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Quantum Markets Limited, where she oversees investment and financial market operations. Her ability to navigate both the technology and finance sectors has positioned her as one of the notable female executives operating at the intersection of innovation and business.
Throughout her career, Kay has remained passionate about expanding opportunities for young people, particularly women seeking to build careers in technology. Through mentorship programmes and talent development initiatives, she has helped nurture aspiring professionals and encourage greater female participation in an industry traditionally dominated by men.
That commitment to empowering future generations earned her recognition at the Women in Tech Africa Summit, where she received a Tech Trailblazer Award for her contributions to technology development and mentorship. Her efforts have extended beyond corporate leadership into creating platforms that expose young Nigerians to opportunities in innovation, entrepreneurship and digital skills.
Education has also remained close to her heart. Together with her husband, she has supported initiatives aimed at developing future leaders through quality learning and skills acquisition.
Despite belonging to one of Nigeria’s most influential business families, Kay has maintained a relatively low public profile. Rather than seeking the spotlight, she has focused on building institutions, supporting innovation and creating opportunities for others.
What makes her story particularly compelling is that while her husband was helping to reshape Nigeria’s banking industry, she was contributing to the technological ecosystem that enabled many businesses, including financial institutions, to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Their journeys may have unfolded in different sectors, but both have been driven by a shared commitment to excellence, innovation and long-term value creation.
Chioma Ekeh

Chioma is more than the wife of one of Nigeria’s most influential technology entrepreneurs, Stan Ekeh who is the founder of Zinox Technologies and one of the pioneers of Nigeria’s digital revolution. She is a business executive, strategist and technology advocate who has spent decades helping to build and expand some of the country’s most recognisable technology brands.
As Chairman of TD Africa, Africa’s leading technology distribution company, a subsidiary of Zinox Technologies, Chioma occupies one of the most significant leadership positions in the country’s ICT ecosystem. Under her stewardship, the company has strengthened its position as a major distributor of global technology brands, connecting manufacturers with businesses and consumers across Africa. Her leadership has helped drive digital access, business growth and technological innovation on a scale that extends far beyond Nigeria.
Her influence within the Zinox Group also reflects a partnership built on shared ambition and complementary strengths. While Leo Stan Ekeh focused on pioneering indigenous technology solutions and expanding the group’s footprint, Chioma played a key role in strengthening corporate structures, driving strategic growth and fostering a culture of innovation.
Over the years, she has become one of the most visible female leaders in Nigeria’s technology sector, advocating greater participation of women in business and technology. Her rise within a predominantly male industry has made her an inspiration to young female professionals seeking leadership opportunities in corporate Nigeria.
Beyond the boardroom, Chioma has remained passionate about mentorship and youth development. Through various initiatives, she has championed entrepreneurship, digital literacy and leadership development, helping to create pathways for the next generation of innovators and business leaders.
Family has remained central to her journey. Together with Leo Stan Ekeh, she has built a partnership that extends beyond marriage into business and nation building. Their shared commitment to technology, innovation and economic development has positioned them among Nigeria’s most influential entrepreneurial couples.
What distinguishes Chioma is her ability to lead with both vision and execution. Rather than existing in the shadow of her husband’s accomplishments, she has built an impressive record of her own, managing large scale operations and helping to shape the future of Africa’s technology ecosystem.
As one of the women behind Nigeria’s most successful businessmen, Chioma Ekeh represents a model of modern partnership where both individuals contribute significantly to building lasting institutions. While Leo Stan Ekeh helped pioneer Nigeria’s technology revolution, Chioma continues to drive its growth.
