Cooking Gas Hits ₦1,500 Per kg Amid Nationwide Scarcity

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has raised concern over worsening supply shortages and rising prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, across the country.

According to the association, cooking gas now sells above ₦1,500 per kilogram, with some retail prices reaching between ₦1,600 and ₦2,000 per kilogram. Marketers reportedly purchase 20 metric tonnes at between ₦25.2 million and ₦26.2 million, depending on location.

In a joint statement by NALPGAM National President, Edu Inyang, and Executive Secretary, Mr Bassey Essien, the association described the situation as severe and unsustainable.

“The citizens of Nigeria have woken up to buy cooking gas, which should be a social item, at a prohibitive cost of over N1,500 per kg,” the statement read.

NALPGAM attributed the crisis to persistent supply shortages, high depot prices, logistics bottlenecks, and rising operational costs. It warned that where product is available, it is sold at rates beyond the reach of average Nigerians.

The association said the situation is reversing gains made in Nigeria’s clean energy transition, as many households and small businesses are being forced back to firewood and charcoal.

“While millions of Nigerians have embraced cooking gas, those gains are at risk as households are struggling to refill cylinders, while many families are reverting to firewood and charcoal,” it stated.

NALPGAM further warned that the crisis could trigger food inflation, business closures, job losses, and reduced investor confidence if not urgently addressed.

It called on the Federal Government, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, NMDPRA, NNPC Limited, producers, and other stakeholders to intervene immediately by improving supply, reducing bottlenecks, and stabilising prices.

“We therefore make a passionate and patriotic appeal, decisive action is needed now,” the association added.
