Staunch New Patriotic Party supporter and political commentator, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, has questioned the relevance of recent discussions surrounding former President John Agyekum Kufuor, insisting that national attention should rather focus on pressing economic challenges.
Speaking upon his arrival at the Accra International Airport after earning a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law in the United States, Afrifa-Mensah addressed supporters who gathered to welcome him home.
According to him, the reception placed a sense of responsibility on him to continue serving the people whenever called upon.
“When I look at the crowds who have gathered to receive me back to Ghana, it makes me sad but also gives me a sense of responsibility,” he said.
Reacting to verbal attacks targeting former President Kufuor, Afrifa-Mensah argued that if there had ever been evidence of wrongdoing against the former leader, legal action should have been taken long ago.
“If Kufuor has stolen from the state, he left government in 2008 when Mahama was vice president during the Mills’ administration. The constitution is clear on stolen state funds. Within three years you have the right to prosecute him (Kufuor). Why haven’t they done so?” he questioned.
He further criticized discussions about the former president’s physical condition, asking what relevance such conversations had to Ghana’s economic difficulties.
“What has whether Kufuor is sitting in a wheelchair or not got to do with dumsor and unemployment?” he asked.
Afrifa-Mensah stressed that public discourse should remain focused on “bread and butter issues” affecting ordinary Ghanaians rather than distractions aimed at shifting attention away from governance and accountability.
“We will not allow them to divert attention. We will dictate the pace of government accountability in this country,” he stated.
I would be recalled that the NPP released a statement on May 8, 2026, calling on the NDC to impress upon Kevin Taylor to issue a “full, unqualified, and public apology” to former President Kufuor over incessant attacks on him.
