Ayawaso East by-election: Vote-buying controversy won’t affect Baba Jamal

Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has dismissed concerns that allegations of vote buying could affect Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed’s chances in the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Wednesday, February 11, he said the electorate had made up their minds.

“Certainly no, it will not have any impact whatsoever. The people of Ayawaso are very decent. I like them. They are lovely, respectable people, so they know who they want to represent them. I can assure you they are going to vote for the NDC. They know what the NDC has done for them over the years and will reward the party on March 3,” he said.

Baba Jamal, a former High Commissioner to Nigeria, filed his nomination to contest the March 3 by-election following the death of sitting MP Mahama Naser Toure on January 4.

He won the NDC parliamentary primary held on February 7, defeating Hajia Amina Adam, the late MP’s widow, and three other aspirants. The primary, however, was overshadowed by allegations of vote buying, with reports that television sets, boiled eggs and other items were distributed to delegates. Some of the allegations were directed at Baba Jamal, prompting his recall from diplomatic service.

The NDC Majority Caucus had called for the annulment of the primary, but a committee chaired by former Information Minister Kofi Totobi Quakyi subsequently upheld the results, clearing Baba Jamal to lead the party into the by-election.

He is expected to face Baba Ali, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, on March 3.
