The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) will embark on nationwide consultations from February 18 to March 27, 2026, to shape Ghana’s sustainable development strategy amid rapid changes in the global economy.

The consultations, to be led by NDPC Chairman Nii Moi Thompson, will engage regional and national stakeholders to discuss opportunities and challenges for the country’s growth in a rapidly changing world economy.

The initiative comes as Ghana’s economy shows notable improvements in macroeconomic indicators, including declines in inflation and interest rates alongside a historic appreciation of the cedi against the United States dollar. These gains have been supported by rising commodity prices, especially gold, and fiscal reforms by the Ministry of Finance that have reduced wasteful government spending.

Dr Thompson and Director General Dr Audrey Smock Amoah, accompanied by senior policy analysts from the Commission, will lead the consultations. Each stop will include the region’s current NDPC representative to ensure local perspectives are incorporated into discussions.

The NDPC plans to base its consultations on local economic development, recognizing it as a foundation for national progress. Regional discussions will involve the 16 regional coordinating councils, various houses of chiefs, and local stakeholders.

Following regional engagements, the Commission will also engage parliamentary leaders and political parties on matters including guidance for party manifestos through a policy and legislative almanac, results based management, and insights into the post war global economy and its implications for Ghana.

The consultations aim to ensure community priorities are reflected in national development strategies, helping Ghana navigate global challenges while taking advantage of emerging opportunities. The NDPC is mandated under Articles 86 and 87 of the 1992 Constitution to advise the President and Parliament on national development planning policy and strategy.

Dr Thompson, appointed NDPC Chairman in February 2025, previously served as Director General of the Commission and led Ghana’s technical delegations to the United Nations to develop the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) between 2014 and 2015. He also oversaw the preparation of Ghana’s 40 Year Development Plan.

The Commission has been working to strengthen the Medium Term National Development Policy Framework for 2026 to 2029 and has warned that ministries and state institutions without validated Medium Term Development Plans will not receive budgetary allocations starting January 2026.

The nationwide consultations represent a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to consolidate economic gains, strengthen governance, and prepare for resilient and inclusive growth as the country works toward its long term vision of becoming a high income nation by 2057.
