Zonda Tec Ghana Limited launched a range of Chery sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in Accra on Wednesday, positioning the Chinese automobile brand as a locally assembled alternative in Ghana’s growing automotive sector.

The event at the company’s Dzorwulu branch showcased the Chery Tiggo 2, Chery Tiggo 7, and Chery Tiggo 9 SUVs, alongside two electric vehicles (EVs), the iCAR V23 and iCAR 03, marking a significant expansion of the company’s product portfolio.

Yang Yang, Managing Director of Zonda Tec Ghana, said the launch represents nearly two decades of commitment to bringing Chinese automobiles to the Ghanaian market. She emphasized that Chery ranks among China’s leading automobile exporters and expressed confidence that Ghanaian consumers will embrace the vehicles’ features and competitive pricing.

The company plans to assemble Chery vehicles at its state of the art facility in Tema, with a new Phase 3 assembly line scheduled for commissioning by June 2026. Yang Yang confirmed the expansion will create over 200 jobs and enhance technology transfer in the automotive manufacturing sector.

Seth Twum Akwaboah, Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), praised Zonda Tec for strengthening Ghana’s automotive manufacturing capabilities. He noted the company has progressed from assembling semi knocked down vehicle components to producing certain parts locally, a development he said aligns with the government’s 24 hour economy policy aimed at expanding industrial production and employment.

Akwaboah called on Zonda Tec to increase local parts manufacturing as the company scales its operations, stating such initiatives would deepen Ghana’s position as a regional automotive assembly hub.

The launch follows Zonda Tec’s November 2025 opening of an ultra modern showroom and service center in Dzorwulu, which also featured the introduction of Great Wall Motor SUVs and motorcycles. The company now operates more than 10 branches across Ghana and employs over 600 workers, with two assembly plants currently operational and a third facility dedicated to electric vehicles expected to be completed by March 2026.

Industry observers describe the Chery launch as evidence of renewed investor confidence in Ghana’s automotive sector, particularly as the government reviews the Ghana Automotive Development Policy to accommodate electric and hybrid vehicles while providing incentives for local assembly operations.
