Orengo Post on Dental Facilities Provokes Sharp Reaction from Residents of Siaya

Siaya Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo on Monday updated his Twitter account with the interesting information that he is in Turkey and he is also impressed by dental equipment at the Istanbul Kent Hospital.

Orengo further posted that they discussed the possibility of partnership in capacity building of Siaya dental personnel and upgrading of the archaic dental facility at the Referral Hospital.

James Orengo has either been out of the country for a while and may be justified to feel enamored by dental facilities at a university hospital, or is simply out of touch with reality. Back at home the issue of tuk-tuk ambulances paid for by the taxpayer’s money while hospitals have no drugs continues to cause a stir. A few months ago a government agency reported that 28,000 homesteads in Siaya are faced with food-shortages due to drought.

Residents of Siaya criticized the national government when ICT CS Eliud Owallo came distributing food.

The construction of the multi-million Siaya Stadium seems to have come to a standstill and the dry spell is playing havoc on the availability of fresh drinking water for both human beings and livestock. Siaya is home to large swathes of Lake Victoria and the world’s second-largest ox-bow lake, Lake Kanyaboli sits on its southwestern tip.

Issues of conservation versus investment have also taken center stage with residents occupying the riparian areas of Yala Swamp threatening to sue the County Government over encroachment by the new investor at Dominion Farms. Mr. Ayiro Lwala of Yala Ecosystem Support Group (YESG) confirms that the legal process is in gear to sue the County Government for allocating community land to a foreigner without conducting public participation.

In parts of Kombewa and Aram livestock are dying because of the biting water shortage.

Reacting to Orengo’s post retired police officer Yusuf Ndeda says: “It’s difficult to comprehend the priorities of Orengo’s government. One would expect that right now he was settling down on the job and paying keen attention to issues of health, water, and sanitation.”

Former West Alego Councilor, Charles Apuda said: “I’m not disappointed at all. As a long-serving politician, I knew that a technocrat whose political life has largely been spent in Nairobi such as Orengo would have a lot of theory rather than the practicals of governing a rural county such as ours”.

Me. Stephen Okumu, Chairperson of Yala Swamp Community Conservation Organization (YASCCO) said: “With all his failures and foibles Rasanga was more accessible as a leader. I don’t think there’s anything seriously wrong with our teeth that the Governor should spend all that time abroad shopping for dental equipment. Surely we need a balance between hypothesis and reality.”
