Residents of Cross River State have been thrown into shock following the arrest of a suspected serial killer, identified simply as Akaninyene, after security operatives uncovered multiple shallow graves allegedly linked to a string of gruesome killings in Odukpani Local Government Area.
The suspect was apprehended during a coordinated security operation in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community, Creektown, after intelligence reports connected him to the disappearance and murder of a recent victim.
According to local sources, including reports by CrossRiverWatch, troops of the Nigerian Army and a tactical special forces unit, working alongside community youths and elders, stormed an isolated forest settlement where the suspect had reportedly built a concealed hut deep inside the bush.
Security sources disclosed that upon sighting operatives approaching the hideout, Akaninyene allegedly attempted to retrieve a weapon from the hut before trying to escape through the forest. He was, however, overpowered and arrested by the tactical team.
What followed has been described by residents as one of the most horrifying criminal discoveries in recent years.

During a search of the hideout, operatives reportedly uncovered at least eight shallow graves, each allegedly containing the decomposing remains of multiple victims buried without their heads. Investigators further discovered that plantain crops had been planted over the graves in what authorities suspect was an attempt to conceal evidence of the crimes.
The grim discovery has intensified fears that the killings may have continued undetected for a prolonged period within the community.
Under interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to being responsible for the deaths of about 30 persons who had previously been declared missing in surrounding communities.
Security operatives subsequently compelled him to lead investigators to several burial locations where more dismembered bodies were exhumed.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the latest killing, which reportedly triggered the security crackdown, occurred on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
The suspect allegedly claimed that a female accomplice assisted in luring victims to isolated locations before they were murdered. According to security findings, the woman reportedly played a role in deceiving unsuspecting victims and facilitating the attacks.
Community members said suspicion intensified after residents reportedly heard desperate cries and sounds of struggle linked to the latest victim, prompting an emergency alert to local authorities.
The Councillor representing Creektown Ward 1, Apostle Hon. Ene Itam, together with the ward leadership, community youths, and elders, escalated reports of repeated disappearances to the Executive Chairman of Odukpani Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Elder Chief Ukpong Etim Asido, who immediately alerted security agencies.
The operation also received support from members of the 8th Legislative Assembly in Odukpani LGA, including Hon. Effiom Ekene and Hon. Emmanuel of Adibo Efut Ward, as efforts intensified to apprehend the suspect and investigate the wider criminal network believed to be involved.
Following the arrest, local youths have continued extensive bush-combing operations across nearby forests in search of additional hideouts or evidence connected to similar crimes.
Security experts say the incident highlights growing concerns over rural insecurity, unresolved missing persons cases, and the increasing sophistication of criminal networks operating in isolated communities across Nigeria.
Analysts further stress the importance of intelligence gathering, community policing, and rapid reporting of suspicious activities as critical tools in combating violent crimes and preventing future tragedies.
Residents of Cross River State have meanwhile been urged to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and promptly report unusual movements or suspicious behavior within their communities.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said authorities are continuing investigations and that an official statement would be released subsequently.
The disturbing discovery has reignited nationwide conversations about public safety, criminal psychology, ritual-related violence, and the urgent need for enhanced security surveillance in vulnerable rural areas across Nigeria.
