The Kenya Red Cross Society Murang’a branch today held its annual Power of Humanity Walk, bringing together more than one thousand senior secondary school students from across the county. Speaking at ST Marys Primary School in Murang’a, the regional Red Cross coordinator for Murang’a and Nyeri counties, Malcom Kanyoko, said the annual event aims to create public awareness and educate communities on how to respond to emerging challenges affecting society. Kanyoko noted that Murang’a County continues to experience disasters such as landslides, adding that community sensitization helps residents respond effectively and take the necessary preventive measures. Njiri School Red Cross patron, Ibrahim Osoro, commended the organization for partnering with school clubs, saying the training equips learners with life-saving skills to assist fellow students during emergencies such as choking and epileptic attacks. Mental health advocate Rhoda Mwongela called on both the national and county governments to continue supporting the Red Cross, noting that the organization has experienced reduced funding following the withdrawal of key international donors. Mwongela further emphasized that apart from financial support, emergency responders also require psychosocial support to help them cope with trauma experienced while responding to disasters. | Kenya News Agency
