Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has responded to growing public concerns over the rapid depletion of mobile data, firmly rejecting claims that the company is behind the issue.
His comments come after a surge in complaints from subscribers who say their data bundles are being used up faster than expected, with some even alleging unexplained losses.
Speaking on Friday, April 17, 2026, Blewett sought to reassure customers, stressing that MTN has no reason to tamper with users’ data, as doing so would harm its reputation and drive customers away.
“There’s zero incentive for MTN to steal data from you. Because it will just chase people away. It’s not something we do; it’s not part of our values. So, there’s a lot that we have to do as customers. We have to be very responsible,” he said.
Rather than wrongdoing, he pointed to changes in how people use their smartphones today. He explained that background activity from apps, automatic updates, and the increasing demand for high-quality video streaming are quietly consuming more data than many users realise.
Blewett also encouraged customers to take control of their usage by keeping an eye on app activity and adjusting settings such as video quality to better manage their data.
