Nairobi: 2 Reasons Sakaja Might Survive The Storms Of City Hall And Serve For 2 Terms (opinion)

Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja got into office following his victory in August 2022 general election, when the City Hall was coming from turbulent leadership crisis. The mess was occasioned by the impeachment of the ex-governor Mike Sonko in 2020 and resignation of his deputy Polycarp Igathe in 2018.

Toughness Of City Politics

Nairobi City politics has always been tough and it requires top leaders who are resilient and unshakeable. Previous governors beginning with the first, Dr Evans Kidero, followed by Sonko have blamed unspecified cartels for taking control of the administration of the City Hall, management of affairs especially which involves cutting of deals. The job is not for the faint-hearted

Kidero once warned his successor that being Nairobi governor was not an easy feat. This follows after he was vanquished in 2017 general election.

When Sonko was impeached in 2022, he pointed fingers of accusation at individuals within the national government then, who were keen to bundle him out of office in order to control the resources in the city fraudulently.

My Take: Sakaja Might Successfully Wade Through The Storms Of The City And Serve For 2 Terms

Sakaja is an individual who has lived in the city long enough to know how its politics operate. He has a picture of how politicians in high offices do things whenever they are elected. There are 2 reasons why he is suitable for the job:

1. He Has Studied Successes And Failures Of Previous Governors From The Fence And Probably Learnt From Them

Sakaja has played politics in Nairobi since 2013, when devolution was being incepted as envisaged in Kenya’s Constitution 2010. The defunct The National Alliance (TNA) nominated him as Member of Parliament then.

In 2017, he was elected senator on Jubilee ticket. He used to be providing checks-and-balances to Kidero and Sonko when the two were governors. Therefore, he knows their hits and misses and from them, he is aware of what to do to win a second term that the two could not do.

2. He Is In Government And Has Learned To Win Over Opposition Side Of Political Divide Too

Sakaja is president Dr William Ruto’s close ally and was elected to office on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in 2022.

However, although he experienced some rebellion from Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Alliance MCAs who rejected him as their governor, he has devised ways of wooing them by appointing some individuals to Executive who are close to retired president Uhuru Kenyatta and former prime minister Raila Odinga.

This might solidify his supporter and set him for a smooth race and, easy re-election win in 2027.

What do you think????
