The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow delivered another electrifying chapter in netball history as England’s Vitality Roses staged a dramatic comeback to defeat South Africa by a narrow margin of 58-54. The victory not only secured England’s place in the semi-finals but also maintained their 100% record of advancing to the last four in Commonwealth Games netball history—a feat unmatched by any other nation.

A High-Stakes Group Stage Clash

With both teams needing a win to progress, the match at the OVO Hydro was a winner-takes-all contest. England, known for their resilience, faced a formidable opponent in South Africa, whose Elmere van der Berg dominated early with 16 goals from 19 attempts, leaving the home crowd in stunned silence. The early deficit was 17-11 in England’s favor, but South Africa quickly seized control, extending their lead to 29-28 by halftime.

England’s Resilient Revival

The turning point came in the second quarter, where Halimat Adio emerged as the game’s standout performer. Her explosive energy and strategic play injected new life into England’s attack, shifting momentum decisively. The Roses’ defense, reinforced by Funmi Fadoju, tightened their structure, preventing South Africa from maintaining their advantage.

The third quarter became England’s breaking point. A five-goal surge early in the period propelled them to a 35-30 lead, and by the final break, they held a 45-41 advantage. The fourth quarter was a masterclass in composure, with Olivia Tchine and Lois Pearson anchoring the attack while Anna Stembridge’s tactical adjustments kept South Africa at bay.

Captain Francesca Williams’ Leadership Shines

England captain Francesca Williams praised her team’s grit and determination, acknowledging the pivotal role of Adio in the comeback. “Shout out to Halimat Adio. She was unreal in that second quarter. So proud of her to bring us that energy and get us back in the game when we needed it,” Williams told TNT Sports.

“We’ve been under pressure all week to perform, and to finish a game like this—riding the wave of goal-for-goal in the last quarter and coming out on top—it’s incredible. I’m so proud of this team.”

A New Era Under Anna Stembridge

This victory marked Anna Stembridge’s first major tournament as England’s head coach, taking over just four months before the Commonwealth Games. Her leadership, combined with the team’s tactical execution, proved decisive in a high-pressure match.

Path to Glory: Semi-Finals and Beyond

England’s journey continues as they face New Zealand in the second semi-final on Saturday, August 1 at 1:00 PM, while Australia will take on Jamaica in the first semi-final at 9:00 AM. The bronze and gold medal matches will follow on Sunday, August 2, with the gold medal contest scheduled for 1:00 PM.

Historical Context: England’s Commonwealth Netball Legacy

Netball has been a staple of the Commonwealth Games since 1998, but England has yet to win a medal when the tournament was held in the United Kingdom. This Glasgow edition presents a golden opportunity for the Roses to finally break that barrier.

Key Takeaways from the Match

  • Halimat Adio’s second-quarter heroics were the turning point in England’s comeback.
  • England’s defense tightened significantly after substitutions, limiting South Africa’s scoring opportunities.
  • Anna Stembridge’s tactical adjustments played a crucial role in maintaining composure under pressure.
  • The final quarter’s composure underlined England’s ability to capitalize on small advantages.

With the semi-finals looming, England’s netball fans can expect another high-octane performance as the Roses aim to secure their first Commonwealth gold medal in UK-hosted history.
