The 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco has already delivered dramatic twists, and the Group A clash between Senegal and Kenya on Thursday was no exception. In a tightly contested match, Seynabou Mbengue’s decisive first-half strike propelled the Lionesses of Teranga to a hard-fought 1-0 victory, reigniting their ambitions of advancing to the quarter-finals after a rocky start. Meanwhile, Kenya’s hopes of qualifying suffered a significant blow following their second consecutive defeat in the tournament.

A Dominant Start for Senegal

From the opening whistle, Senegal dictated the tempo, exploiting Kenya’s defensive structure with fluid passing and precise movement. The breakthrough came in the 12th minute when Bineta Seck orchestrated a well-weighted through-ball into the path of Mbengue. The forward, a key player for Senegal, unleashed a powerful strike that soared past goalkeeper Lilian Awuor, embedding the ball deep into the net. The goal sent the Senegalese squad into a frenzy, while Kenya’s Harambee Starlets were left scrambling to regain composure.

Kenya’s Frantic Late Push Fails to Materialize

Despite Senegal’s early lead, Kenya refused to go quietly. The East African powerhouse mounted a relentless counterattack, with Captain Mwanalima Jereko nearly equalizing in the 41st minute. Her long-range effort from outside the box clipped the crossbar, leaving the Kenyan fans in agony and the Senegalese defense on high alert.

Moments before halftime, Senegal nearly doubled their advantage when Ndeye Awa Casset found space inside the penalty area. However, Awuor’s heroic save tipped the ball onto the crossbar, denying Kenya a potential equalizer and keeping the match in doubt.

Second Half Struggles and Missed Opportunities

The second half began with Kenya intensifying their pressure, but Senegal’s defensive organization held firm. Fasila Omondi tested Adji Ndiaye early on, but the Senegalese goalkeeper made a crucial save to keep her team in the game.

Kenya’s golden chance arrived in the 62nd minute when substitute Marion Serenge found herself in a promising one-on-one situation. However, her long-range shot flew wide, leaving the Harambee Starlets frustrated.

As the match entered its final stages, Kenya redoubled their efforts, with Tereza Obunyu striking the post after cutting inside her marker. The rebound fell to Jereko, whose follow-up shot was brilliantly saved by Ndiaye, preserving Senegal’s narrow but crucial lead.

Senegal’s Resilience and Kenya’s Struggles

Despite Kenya’s late flurry of attacks, Senegal’s defensive resilience proved decisive. The Lionesses of Teranga held firm, denying Kenya any further chances and securing the three vital points.

This victory revives Senegal’s knockout hopes, placing them in a strong position heading into their final group match against tournament hosts Morocco. A positive result in that game could guarantee their place in the quarter-finals.

For Kenya, the loss cements their struggles, leaving them relying entirely on their final group match to salvage any chance of advancing. With two defeats in as many games, the Harambee Starlets will need a miraculous turnaround to stay in contention.

What’s Next for WAFCON 2026?

The 2026 WAFCON continues to deliver unpredictable drama, with Senegal now back in the race for the knockout stages. Their next challenge against Morocco will be crucial, as a win could solidify their path to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s journey remains uncertain, with their final group match serving as their last chance to secure a top-two finish and avoid early elimination.

As the tournament progresses, every match will be a battle for survival, and the most resilient teams will emerge victorious.
