Kenya 7s draw tough pool featuring Fiji & South Africa in Bordeaux 7s

  • Kenya 7s have landed in a tricky Pool A for the Bordeaux 7s, set for June 5–7 in France.
  • Shujaa have been drawn alongside South Africa, Great Britain and Fiji in the pool stage.
  • They head into the final leg of the World Championship sitting eighth in the overall standings with 14 points.

Kenya 7s have landed in a challenging Pool A for the final leg of the 2026 HSBC World Championship in Bordeaux, France, scheduled for June 5–7.

Shujaa have been drawn alongside Fiji, South Africa and Great Britain, a grouping that will demand their very best if they are to secure a place among the top eight teams and book their ticket to HSBC SVNS 1 next season.

Fresh from an eighth-place finish in Spain last weekend, where they once again managed to end the tournament inside the top eight, Shujaa head into the decisive round sitting eighth overall with 14 points.

This follows a campaign in which they were unable to replicate their impressive first-leg performance in Hong Kong, where they claimed seventh place.

In Valladolid, they settled for eighth after suffering a 14-5 defeat to France in the seventh-place playoff on Sunday.

To lock in their status, they will need to qualify for the main cup quarterfinals in this round, putting them under serious pressure.

Of the three opponents in their pool, Shujaa have already faced two in the previous rounds.

South Africa, the overall leaders after winning the Hong Kong Sevens and finishing runners-up in Spain, have met Kenya twice during the three-leg series.

Their first encounter came in China during the quarter-finals, where the Blitzboks staged a late comeback to snatch a 26-22 victory. The two sides were then drawn together in Pool A in Spain, with South Africa claiming a 14-0 win in the group-stage clash.

Now leading the standings with 38 points, four ahead of second-placed Argentina, South Africa will be eager to strengthen their grip on the World Championship title, providing Shujaa with another stern examination.

Great Britain will also face Kenya again in the pool stage after the two sides met in Spain in a tightly contested encounter. Shujaa edged the match 12-7 on Saturday to secure a place in the main Cup quarter-finals.

Great Britain, who were among the core teams in the top flight this season, will be keen to bounce back after enduring a difficult campaign. They head to France rooted at the bottom of the standings with just four points.

Meanwhile, it will be the first time in this World Championship series that Shujaa take on Fiji, who have also enjoyed a strong run across the opening two legs.

Heading into this round, six of the leading teams have already secured their status for next season’s HSBC SVNS 1.

South Africa leads the pack, followed by Argentina in second, Australia rounding out the podium in third with 30 points, while Fiji, Spain, and New Zealand sit fourth, fifth, and sixth with 26 points each respectively.

France leapfrogged Kenya into seventh place with 14 points, although both teams are level on points.

Shujaa remain in eighth, eight points clear of ninth-placed Uruguay. Germany occupy 10th place with five points, level with the USA in 11th, while Great Britain complete the standings with four points.
