Frederick Opare-Ansah Reaffirms Commitment to Fair, Transparent, and Credible NPP National Elections

In a recent address to the National Press Club in Accra, Frederick Opare-Ansah, the National Organizing Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reiterated the party’s unwavering dedication to conducting free, fair, transparent, and credible national elections. His remarks underscore the NPP’s long-standing commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring electoral integrity—a cornerstone of Ghana’s political landscape.

A Call for Unbiased and Accountable Elections

Opare-Ansah emphasized that the 2024 general elections must be conducted with the highest standards of fairness, transparency, and credibility. He stressed that the NPP remains steadfast in its belief that every Ghanaian citizen deserves a voice in shaping the nation’s future through a free and competitive electoral process.

“The NPP is committed to ensuring that the electoral process is not only fair but also transparent, allowing every Ghanaian to participate without fear or favor,” he stated. His remarks followed growing concerns among political observers and civil society groups regarding electoral irregularities, voter intimidation, and the need for an independent and impartial Electoral Commission (EC).

Strengthening Electoral Integrity

To reinforce the credibility of the upcoming elections, Opare-Ansah highlighted several key measures the NPP intends to implement:

  1. Enhanced Voter Education and Registration
The party has called for expanded voter registration drives, particularly targeting youth, diaspora Ghanaians, and marginalized communities, to ensure broader participation. Opare-Ansah noted that inclusive voter registration is essential for legitimizing the electoral process and preventing voter suppression tactics.

  2. Strengthening the Electoral Commission (EC)
He urged the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to adopt modern technology—such as biometric verification, digital voter registration, and real-time results transmission—to minimize fraud and enhance transparency. “The EC must be seen as an impartial arbiter, free from political interference,” he asserted.

  3. Promoting a Level Playing Field
Opare-Ansah criticized unfair media coverage, unequal campaign financing, and political interference as major threats to electoral fairness. He called on broadcast and print media to provide balanced reporting and urged political parties to adhere to campaign finance regulations to prevent undue influence.

  4. Ensuring Security and Free Expression
The NPP leader emphasized the need for robust security measures to protect voters, polling stations, and election officials from violence and intimidation. He also stressed the importance of free speech and assembly for political parties and civil society organizations during the election period.

Addressing Past Challenges and Future Prospects

Ghana’s electoral history has seen both progress and setbacks, with past elections marred by controversies over results, voter turnout discrepancies, and allegations of electoral malpractice. Opare-Ansah acknowledged these challenges but reaffirmed the NPP’s resolve to learn from past mistakes and ensure a more robust and credible electoral process in 2024.

“We cannot afford to repeat the same errors that have undermined trust in our democracy,” he said. “The NPP is ready to work with all stakeholders—including the EC, civil society, and international observers—to guarantee an election that reflects the true will of the Ghanaian people.”

The Role of Civil Society and International Observers

Opare-Ansah also underscored the critical role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in monitoring elections and holding authorities accountable. He welcomed the involvement of domestic and international election observers, including groups like the African Union, Commonwealth, and the European Union, to ensure transparency and deter electoral fraud.

“An election is only as strong as the institutions and people who safeguard it,” he remarked. “We must all play our part in ensuring that Ghana’s democracy remains resilient and credible.”

Conclusion: A Path Forward for Ghana’s Democracy

As Ghana prepares for another high-stakes general election, Frederick Opare-Ansah’s pledge reaffirms the NPP’s unwavering commitment to democratic principles. While challenges remain, his call for fairness, transparency, and accountability sets a crucial benchmark for the electoral process.

The success of the 2024 elections will not only determine Ghana’s political leadership but also reinforce public confidence in the nation’s democratic institutions. With stakeholders—including political parties, the EC, civil society, and international observers—working collaboratively, Ghana stands a better chance of delivering an election that is truly reflective of the people’s mandate.

As the country moves closer to polling day, the NPP’s stance on electoral integrity serves as a reminder that democracy is not a given—it must be actively defended and nurtured at every level.
