Accra, June 3, GNA – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) will honour the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and several distinguished institutions and individuals for their contributions to press freedom, media development and national progress.
The Association said the recognition of the Ghana News Agency underscored its longstanding role in providing credible and timely news and its contribution to strengthening democratic governance through reliable information dissemination.
The awards ceremony, scheduled for June 6, 2026, in Accra, forms part of activities marking this year’s World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) and will bring together key stakeholders from the media, government and development sectors.
A statement signed by Mr Dominic Hlordzi, General Secretary of the GJA, said the event would be held under the theme: “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security.”
About 300 guests, including ministers of state, members of parliament, diplomats, media practitioners, development partners and business leaders, are expected to attend.
President John Dramani Mahama will be represented by Mr Sam Nartey George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations. Other expected guests include Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, and Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader.
Dr Charity Binka, President of the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN)-Ghana Chapter, will chair the ceremony.
The GJA said the awards sought to recognise outstanding contributions to the promotion and protection of press freedom, as well as the growth and professionalisation of Ghana’s media landscape.
Institutions to be honoured include the Graphic Communications Group Limited, The Catholic Standard, the Bank of Ghana and the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City Accra for their support to journalism and national development.
The Association will also honour individuals who have championed press freedom, including Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Haruna Atta, Mr Samson Lardy Anyenini and the late Justice Kwame Afreh.
Recipients under the Dedication and Valour category include veteran journalist Sir Benedicto Batabe Assorow, Ambassador Gina Blay, Mr Kwabena Yeboah, Mr Kofi Badu and Dr Gamel Nasser Adam.
Other personalities to be recognised for their contributions to media development are Prof Amin Alhassan, Prof Omane Antwi, Mr Kofi Totobi Quakyi, Mrs Beatrice Agyeman, Mr Ken Ansah and Mr Fada Dickson Narh.
A special recognition award will be presented to the Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Hüseyin Güngör, for his support to the media fraternity.
The GJA said the event would also provide an opportunity for reflection on the future of journalism and the role of the media in promoting peace, development and accountability.
It called on media practitioners and the public to support the ceremony and celebrate individuals and institutions whose work continues to advance press freedom and democratic governance in Ghana.
