2026 National Sports Festival: FG Approves Major Sports Infrastructure Projects for Enugu Ahead of Coal City Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a successful and world-class 2026 National Sports Festival by approving major sports infrastructure projects for Enugu State ahead of the highly anticipated Coal City Games.

The Federal Government, through the NSC, approved a series of strategic projects aimed at strengthening Enugu State’s readiness to host one of Nigeria’s biggest multi-sport events.

Among the approved projects are:

the construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool

renovation of the indoor sports hall

rehabilitation of athletes’ hostels

and several supporting sports infrastructure developments across the state.

The projects are expected to significantly improve Enugu’s ability to host major national and international sporting competitions while also creating lasting benefits for athlete development and youth engagement.

One of the key highlights is the construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool, regarded as a major boost for aquatic sports development in Nigeria.

The facility is expected to provide better training opportunities for swimmers and position Enugu as a future destination for national and international aquatics competitions.

The development also comes at a time when Nigerian swimmers are increasingly gaining continental recognition and winning medals at major championships across Africa.

The planned upgrade of the indoor sports hall will modernize facilities for several indoor sports including:

basketball

volleyball

badminton

table tennis

handball

combat sports

and other multi-purpose indoor events.

According to the Commission, the renovation will improve athlete welfare, upgrade spectator experience, and bring the facilities closer to international standards.

Another major aspect of the project is the rehabilitation of athletes’ hostels, which is expected to improve accommodation conditions for athletes and officials during competitions and training camps.

The upgraded hostels will also support long-term talent development programmes and future sporting activities in the state.

The NSC further revealed that additional supporting infrastructure projects will strengthen Enugu’s sports ecosystem, increase grassroots participation, boost sports tourism, and create employment opportunities for youths.

The approvals reflect the Federal Government’s renewed commitment toward revamping sports infrastructure nationwide under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE).

With preparations gathering momentum, Enugu State is now expected to become one of the major sporting hubs in Nigeria as attention gradually shifts toward the 2026 National Sports Festival, Coal City Games.
