Accra, July 28, 2024 — In a landmark move to combat drug abuse among Ghana’s youth, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has formally engaged Zion Felix, one of the country’s most influential digital content creators and media personalities, to spearhead a nationwide drug-free lifestyle campaign. The strategic collaboration, announced through a statement to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), marks a significant step in leveraging social media influence to counteract the rising tide of substance abuse in the country.

A Strategic Alliance for Youth Empowerment

The initiative was spearheaded by Mr. Alexander Twum-Barimah (Esq.), the Deputy Director-General of NACOC, who oversees Enforcement, Control, and Elimination. In a meeting held to formalize the partnership, Twum-Barimah emphasized the critical role of digital influencers in shaping youth behavior, noting that their reach and relatability make them ideal ambassadors for public health messaging.

“The youth of today are deeply connected to digital platforms, and their attitudes and decisions are increasingly influenced by the content they consume,” Twum-Barimah stated. “By partnering with Zion Felix, we aim to amplify our prevention campaigns in a way that resonates directly with young Ghanaians, fostering a culture of responsibility and informed choices.”

Prevention as the Cornerstone of NACOC’s Mission

Twum-Barimah underscored that prevention remains the most effective strategy in combating drug abuse, citing statistics that highlight the devastating physical, psychological, and social consequences of substance misuse. He called for stronger collaborations between government agencies and media personalities to disseminate evidence-based information in engaging, accessible formats.

“Young people are often exposed to misinformation or glamourized portrayals of drug use in various media channels,” he explained. “Through this partnership, we hope to counter these narratives with truthful, science-backed messaging that empowers them to make healthy, drug-free decisions.”

Zion Felix Commits to the Cause

In a positive response, Zion Felix expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, affirming his commitment to using his platforms—including social media, podcasts, and digital content—to educate and inspire Ghanaian youth. Felix, known for his authentic engagement with young audiences, pledged to demystify the risks of drug abuse while promoting alternative, fulfilling lifestyles.

“I’ve always believed in using my voice for causes that matter, and drug prevention is a critical issue that affects our future,” Felix remarked. “By working with NACOC, I can reach millions of young people with real stories, expert insights, and actionable advice to help them stay safe and make better choices.”

Key Stakeholders in the Partnership

The meeting, which solidified the collaboration, was attended by several high-ranking officials within NACOC, including:
– PNCO Ernestina Adjei, the Acting Director of Drug Demand Reduction, who oversees programs aimed at reducing substance abuse through education and community outreach.
– Mr. Felix Agariga, the Director of Intelligence, whose role involves monitoring trends in drug trafficking and abuse to inform preventive strategies.
– The Head of the Public Affairs Department, responsible for media relations and public communication to ensure transparency and engagement with stakeholders.

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Drug Prevention

The partnership between NACOC and Zion Felix is expected to take a multi-dimensional approach, incorporating:
1. Educational Content – Fact-based videos, infographics, and podcasts detailing the short-term and long-term effects of drug use.
2. Storytelling Campaigns – Personal narratives from recovering addicts, medical professionals, and youth leaders to humanize the issue.
3. Interactive Engagement – Live Q&A sessions, challenges, and user-generated content encouraging young people to share their perspectives.
4. Partnerships with Schools and Youth Groups – Collaborations with student unions, sports clubs, and cultural organizations to integrate drug prevention into extracurricular activities.

The Broader Impact on Ghana’s Youth

With Ghana’s youth population exceeding 20 million, the need for proactive drug prevention has never been more urgent. Studies indicate that early exposure to drugs—often through peer pressure, curiosity, or misinformation—can lead to addiction, academic decline, and social isolation. By engaging a trusted digital voice like Zion Felix, NACOC aims to shift cultural perceptions and reduce stigma around seeking help.

“This partnership is not just about stopping drug use; it’s about building resilience, fostering critical thinking, and creating a generation that values their health and future,” Twum-Barimah added.

Looking Ahead: A Call to Collective Action

While the NACOC-Zion Felix collaboration represents a major step forward, Twum-Barimah stressed that sustained success requires the involvement of families, schools, religious institutions, and the private sector. He urged all stakeholders to support prevention efforts through awareness campaigns, policy advocacy, and community initiatives.

“Drug abuse is a shared responsibility, and by working together, we can ensure that Ghana’s youth grow up informed, empowered, and free from the grip of substance abuse,” he concluded.

As the campaign gains momentum, Zion Felix’s platforms—including his YouTube channel, Instagram, and podcast—will serve as key channels for disseminating NACOC’s messages. The initiative is poised to redefine drug prevention in Ghana, proving that partnerships between government and digital influencers can drive meaningful social change.
