South Africa Marks 62nd Anniversary of Nelson Mandela Dock Speech

South Africans commemorated the 62nd anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s historic “I am prepared to die” speech on April 20, 2026, while community groups nationwide gathered to create blankets for the vulnerable in honor of his legacy.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation noted that the original address took place during the 1964 Rivonia Trial, where Mandela outlined the principles of his political struggle over four hours. The speech remains a definitive statement against racial domination in South Africa.

“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” said Nelson Mandela, Former President of South Africa.

Following the 1964 address, Mandela and seven comrades, including Walter Sisulu and Ahmed Kathrada, were convicted of sabotage and sentenced to life imprisonment. A rare signed typescript of the speech is currently held by the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.

“The invincibility of our cause and the certainty of our final victory are the impenetrable armour of those who consistently uphold their faith in freedom and justice in spite of political persecution.” wrote Nelson Mandela, Former President of South Africa.

In a contemporary tribute to Mandela’s values, the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement organized events across Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Gqeberha to mark World Creativity and Innovation Day. The initiative, founded by Carolyn Steyn in 2013, mobilizes volunteers to knit and crochet blankets for shelters and schools.

The movement recently underwent a leadership transition with Annie Robinson Grealy stepping in to head operations. Major gatherings were held at Steyn City in Johannesburg and the Pearson Conservatory in St George’s Park, where participants contributed yarn to support the cause.
