Land repossession threatens education infrastructure in Volta region

By Frank Kwame Abbor, GNA

Ho, July 1, GNA – Mrs Marian Jemima Akua Adzroe, the Volta Regional Director of Education, has raised an alarm over the growing threat posed by land repossession and encroachment on lands earmarked for educational infrastructure development in the Volta Region.

She said educational infrastructure development in the region was facing serious setbacks as some families allegedly reclaim and sell lands originally donated or allocated for the construction of school facilities, thereby undermining government efforts to expand access to quality education.

Mrs Adzroe made the remarks when she and her team met the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in Ho on June 18, 2026, where she highlighted the negative impact of land disputes on ongoing and planned education projects across the region.

Some institutions such as Avatime Senior High School, Ho Technical Institute, and the proposed Gbekor Senior High School football field had all been affected in varying degrees by land disputes, encroachment, and competing ownership claims.

She said the situation had created uncertainty for contractors and education authorities, leading to delays, suspension or complete stalling of several projects, thereby affecting the delivery of essential educational infrastructure.

Mrs Adzroe described the trend as a serious threat to education delivery in the region, stressing that the lack of secure land tenure for school projects was weakening efforts to improve teaching and learning conditions.

She called for stronger collaboration between traditional authorities, local government institutions and community stakeholders to safeguard lands earmarked for educational purposes and to prevent further encroachment and illegal reclamation.

Education stakeholders in the region also expressed concern that continued land disputes could derail progress in expanding school infrastructure and limit access to quality education facilities for students across affected communities.

Mrs Adzroe urged chiefs to call their subordinates to order, warning that failure to address the situation could worsen tensions and further destabilise education development efforts in the region.

The issue is expected to feature prominently in ongoing engagements aimed at finding lasting solutions to land disputes affecting education infrastructure in the Volta Region.
