Gov’t confirms Black Queens are safe in UAE

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reassured the nation that the senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, is safe and secure in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This comes amid escalating tensions and military actions in the Middle East.

In a statement released on Sunday, March 1, Mr Ablakwa confirmed that he has been in direct communication with the team’s leadership to verify their well-being.

He emphasised that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the UAE is actively on the ground, providing full consular support to the delegation.

“In this turbulent moment, the safety and welfare of all Ghanaians, particularly those currently in the Middle East, remains our utmost priority,” Ablakwa stated in a Facebook post, seeking to quell growing concerns back home.

The reassurance comes as the region experiences a wave of volatility, with reports indicating that several nations, including Qatar and Kuwait, have closed their airspace following retaliatory strikes.

This unrest sparked initial reports suggesting that the Black Queens might be stranded.

The 25-player squad, accompanied by 16 officials, arrived in Dubai on February 25 to compete in the Pink Ladies Cup, a four-nation invitational tournament.

While awaiting further directives, team officials have instructed the players, who are currently lodged at the Four Points by Sheraton in Sharjah, to pack their belongings as a precautionary measure amidst the fluid situation.
