Catholic Sister in Kenya Calls for Solidarity with Victims of Environmental Degradation

The Kenyan member of the Sisters of St Joseph of Tarbes (SJT) acknowledged the spiritual and logistical support that AOSK continues to receive from the Archdiocese in its environmental initiatives, saying, “The accompaniment (support) has turned a consecrated light that affirms our shared belief in the Lord God’s Church.”

Pope Saint John Paul II instituted the World Day for Consecrated Life in 1997 as an annual observance to be marked on February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. For 2026, the event that brings together ICLSAL members was organized under the theme, “Consecrated for peace, Compassion, and Mission”.

Pope Leo XIV proclaimed 2026 as the Franciscan Jubilee Year inviting the Consecrated to renew their vocation in the spirit of Gospel simplicity, peace, and compassionate service.

He proclaimed it as a “Special Year of St. Francis” to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death. During this time of grace, which will extend until January 2027, the faithful are granted the opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence.

In her February 7 remarks, Sr. Kariithi told women and men Religious in ADN, “As we look forward and take a joyful participation in the Jubilee Year of St. Francis, we do so to be inspired by his life of simplicity, fraternity, and love for the Gospel people.”

“In the spirit of the Holy Father’s call to a missionary and support of the Church, we encourage Clergy, Laity, as one people of God and ourselves to open together, religious,” the AOSK official said.

She congratulated the Clergy and members of ICLSAL within the Archdiocese of Nairobi for their “steadfast and prophetic virtues.”

Acknowledging the economic challenges facing Kenya, which the Kenyan Sister said may feel heavy and overwhelming to the Consecrated, she said, “As people of hope, we refuse to give in to discouragement. Together, through resilience, solidarity, and creativity, we can rise above these difficulties.”

“May our lives continue to shine a sense of hope, leading others to encounter Christ. Together, let us build a future where faith is rich, hope is renewed, love is active, and peace is possible,” Sr. Kariithi said in her February 7 remarks.
