Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said the New Patriotic Party’s ideological foundations continue to resonate with the Ghanaian electorate, despite recent political setbacks.
He made the assertion while addressing party executives and aspirants at the NPP’s presidential aspirants peace pact signing ceremony held in Accra on Thursday, January 22.
According to him, the party’s enduring appeal is rooted in its commitment to democracy, individual liberty and shared prosperity.
Akufo-Addo’s remarks come ahead of the NPP’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, a contest that has generated intense internal competition.
The former president said that the party’s recent challenges are not ideological but organisational and behavioural.
“The ideology of the New Patriotic Party remains deeply attractive to the majority of Ghanaians. Our commitment to individual liberty, respect for human rights, private enterprise, the rule of law and human development in a society of shared prosperity continues to resonate across the country,” he said.
He cautioned aspirants and their supporters against conduct that could further fracture the party, stressing that unity is critical to regaining public trust.
Akufo-Addo recalled past presidential primaries within the NPP, arguing that discipline and fraternity among contestants had been key to the party’s historic victories.
The NPP is expected to elect its next flagbearer from five contenders: Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The party’s presidential election committee has noted that more than 200,000 delegates are expected to participate in the nationwide polls across 333 centres.
