A key member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Arthur Kennedy, has questioned the credibility of disciplinary actions within the party, arguing that genuine accountability must extend to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo if the NPP is serious about internal reform.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Big Issue on Saturday, January 17, Dr. Kennedy criticised both past and present disciplinary decisions within the party, describing them as selective and lacking due process. He cited earlier actions against former party executives Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong, which he said were unjustified and politically motivated.
According to Dr. Kennedy, the fallout from those decisions continues to undermine the party’s cohesion and credibility. He maintained that the two former executives committed no wrongdoing and were removed through processes that were “manufactured and vindictive,” rather than guided by clear and consistent principles.
He argued that for discipline to be meaningful, it must be applied fairly and without bias across all levels of leadership.
“You cannot discipline selectively,” he said, stressing that accountability should not exclude senior figures or former presidents.
Dr. Kennedy directly referenced the Akufo-Addo administration, insisting that the party must be willing to critically examine the former President’s leadership record.
He pointed to the absence of cabinet reshuffles, allegations of corruption, and what he described as widespread arrogance in government as issues that deserve internal scrutiny.
According to him, holding former President Akufo-Addo accountable within the party’s structures would send a strong signal about the NPP’s commitment to reform and future leadership standards.
“Those filings were not done with due process; they were cooked and manufactured. Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong had done nothing wrong. Their expulsions were vindictive and non-principled, and that is the price we are still paying.
“If we are going to discipline people, then we should discipline people left, right and centre. I want to suggest that if we are in the mood to discipline, then by now we should be calling Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the carpet for the government he led, no cabinet reshuffle, corruption and arrogance everywhere,” he said.
