Metro Mass Transit to receive 300 Isuzu buses by February

Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) is set to boost its fleet with the procurement of about 300 Isuzu buses by February 2026 as part of efforts to address the growing shortage of public transport vehicles in Accra.

The announcement was made during a visit by the Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, on Friday, January 16, to the company’s headquarters in Accra, where MMT management disclosed ongoing collaborations with private suppliers and investors to expand its operations.

According to the Managing Director of MMT, Kale Cesar, the company is also working with private vendors to procure 15-seater Toyota Hiace buses and 30-seater Coaster buses to improve transport services across the capital.

“We have a company that is going to supply us with about 300 Isuzu buses by next month, February. Your Excellency, we have also engaged other private vendors who will supply Toyota Hiace buses and some 30-seater Coaster buses,” he stated.

Mr Cesar explained that the planned acquisitions form part of a broader strategy to increase the number of buses in active service and reduce pressure on the existing fleet.

He further revealed that MMT has already signed a contract with a private supplier for 100 electric buses, but funding constraints have delayed full delivery.

“We already have an outstanding contract for EV buses. The contractor supplied only 10 units, and with the release of funds by the Ministry of Finance, the remaining 90 buses could be delivered,” he said.

The Managing Director, therefore, appealed to the Ministry of Finance to release the needed funds to enable the delivery of the remaining electric buses, noting that the move would significantly enhance MMT’s capacity and improve public transport delivery.
