Kupulima, (UW/R), May 26, GNA – The Kupulima market in the Sissala West District has been reopened to business after it was temporarily closed down due to low patronage.
The market has the potential to develop into a major commercial hub in the area, promoting cross-border trade due to its strategic location, 15 kilometres from Leo in Burkina Faso.
The market, which comes a day after the Tumu market, also has facilities for quarantine and veterinary services, which could lead to the creation of a livestock market for both Ghana and Burkina Faso.
Speaking at a ceremony at Kupulima to reopen the market, Kuoro Osman Deiwia Nankpa III, Paramount Chief of the Gandawii Traditional Area, called on the people in the area to support and ensure the market thrived for the benefit of the people in the area and Ghana as a whole.
He also appealed to stakeholders, including traditional authorities in the area, to institute punitive measures against individuals who engaged in nefarious activities that would undermine the market.
Kuoro Nankpa commended past and present DCEs for contributing to ensuring the reopening of the market project.
Kuoro Amidu Borsu, Chief of Kupulima, call on all his kinsmen to patronise the market to help create trading and business opportunities for their women and the youth.
In a remark, Mr Forkah Mahamud, a former DCE for the area, appealed to the District Assembly and Member of Parliament to lobby for a 24-hour market model for the area.
Mr Fuseini Gbene, the District Chief Executive (DCE), expressed gratitude to the previous and current governments for their efforts to ensure improvement and reopening of the market.
“The NDC government has anchored most of its activities to include the 24-hour economy markets, for which reason a market of this stature got investment from the government”, he explained.
He charged the elders of the community to preserve the market to enable it to turn around the socio-economic fortunes of the indigents and Ghana as a whole.
The DCE gave assurances of providing adequate security to the area to ensure the safety of traders patronising that market.
He also encouraged small ruminant and poultry sellers to sell their animals at the Kupulima market instead of selling them at the Leo market.
Mr Mohammed Adams Sukparu, the MP for the area, in an interview with the GNA, corroborated calls to the constituents to patronise the market.
He urged them to desist from illicit and unlawful trade activities that could compromise the safety and peace of both Ghanaians and Burkinabes.
Chief Salam Sibiri, the Chief of Leo in Burkina Faso, who attended the event, said: “The market is created for everyone, so that people can store and sell their goods, and come together as one community.”
