Wahome Alleges Why The Ebola Case Reported In The Country Could Be Fake
Political commentator Wahome Thuku has cast doubt on the first Ebola case reported in Kenya, arguing that the way the story has played out does not add up. In a post on X, he laid out his reasoning, though he offered no evidence that the case was invented.
According to Wahome, the patient died of Ebola at Nairobi Hospital on Monday. He guessed that the man was a Kenyan of some means, since he was able to fly in from Uganda and check into one of the most prestigious hospitals in the country. He added that such a person is likely to pay school fees for children in his village and be highly regarded at home.
Wahome said the family was briefed and the man was buried safely. His main point is what has happened since. Three days later, he argued, none of the relatives has told a friend or a neighbour. In a Kenyan village, he said, news like that would pass from one person to the next until it reached the nearest shopping centre within hours. To him, the silence is strange.
His argument rests on how news travels in communities, not on any medical or official finding. A family could stay quiet for many reasons, including grief, privacy or instructions from health workers, and Wahome did not address them.
Earlier reports said the patient travelled on Jambojet flight JM 8523 from Entebbe to Nairobi, and that authorities and the airline were tracing 23 passengers and 4 crew members. Health officials have been carrying out contact tracing as part of the outbreak response.
