Ann Waiguru Alleges Consequences Agikuyu Community Might Encounter for Aligning With Opposition
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has raised concerns over the political direction of the Agikuyu community as divisions continue to emerge in the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Waiguru has cautioned residents against abandoning President William Ruto’s administration for the opposition, arguing that political divisions could weaken the region’s collective bargaining power and its ability to pursue development priorities.
Her remarks come at a time when the political landscape in Mount Kenya is undergoing significant changes, with several leaders distancing themselves from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and exploring alternative political alliances.
The governor has consistently maintained that the region should remain united and engage constructively with the national government to advance its economic and development interests.
According to Waiguru, divisions among Mount Kenya leaders could make it more difficult for the community to negotiate for its interests at the national level.
Waiguru’s Position on Mount Kenya Politics
Waiguru’s remarks reflect the growing debate over whether the Agikuyu community should continue supporting Ruto or consider alternative political arrangements ahead of the next election.
In April 2026, the Kirinyaga governor joined Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in mobilising support for Ruto’s re-election bid. The two leaders urged residents to maintain their political relationship with the administration.
However, the region has witnessed increasing political disagreements following the fallout between Ruto and his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.
Gachagua has since intensified his political activities through the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), seeking to consolidate support among Mount Kenya residents dissatisfied with the current administration.
The development has created competing political camps, with some leaders defending their association with Ruto while others argue that the region should reconsider its political strategy.
The changing political situation has been reinforced by the decisions of several leaders to distance themselves from UDA.
On October 8, 2026, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba announced that she would not defend her parliamentary seat on a UDA ticket, citing concerns about governance and the government’s handling of issues affecting her constituents.
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata and Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha have also aligned themselves with DCP, while Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has moved away from UDA.
These developments have intensified discussions about the future of Mount Kenya politics and the possibility of new alliances emerging before the 2027 polls.
The region remains politically significant because of its contribution to Ruto’s victory in the 2022 presidential election.
What Lies Ahead for the Agikuyu Community?
Waiguru’s warning highlights the competing arguments surrounding the community’s political future, particularly the importance of unity, representation and access to development opportunities.
While leaders supporting Ruto maintain that working with the government could help the region advance its priorities, opposition figures continue to challenge the administration over governance and its relationship with Mount Kenya.
As the 2027 election approaches, residents will have to evaluate the different political proposals and determine which leaders best represent their interests.
For now, the growing divisions among Mount Kenya politicians suggest that the region’s political direction will remain a major issue in the country’s preparations for the next General Election.
