Suluhu Breaks Silence After 32 People Die in Two Horrific Morogoro Road Accidents
Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed deep sorrow following the deaths of 32 people in two separate horrific road accidents in Morogoro Region, with the tragedies renewing concerns over road safety across the country.
The accidents occurred on Thursday, October 8, 2026, claiming dozens of lives and leaving several other people injured. One of the crashes involved a passenger bus and a truck, resulting in a devastating fire that killed 28 people.
In a statement shared on her official X account on Friday, October 9, Suluhu conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families, describing the deaths as a painful loss for the country.
“I have received with great sadness the news of the deaths of 32 of our fellow citizens resulting from two road accidents that occurred in the Morogoro Region on Thursday, October 8, 2026,” the President said.
She extended her sympathies to Morogoro Regional Commissioner Queen Sendiga, Tanzania Police Force Inspector General Camillus Wambura, the affected families and the wider Tanzanian community.
The President also prayed for comfort and strength for those mourning their loved ones while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
The deadliest accident occurred at Mkambarani Village along the Morogoro–Dar es Salaam highway, where a passenger bus collided head-on with a timber-carrying Scania truck.
According to reports, the collision triggered a fire that engulfed the bus, leaving 28 people dead.
The bus was travelling from Dar es Salaam towards Mbeya when the accident occurred.
Preliminary information reported by Tanzanian media indicated that the truck was travelling in the opposite direction when the collision happened.
Authorities were expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash, including the sequence of events that led to the fatal collision.
The second accident involved three vehicles, including a police vehicle, and claimed four lives.
The incident occurred in the wider Morogoro Region, bringing the combined death toll from the two crashes to 32.
The loss of life has raised fresh questions about driver behaviour, vehicle safety and compliance with traffic regulations on Tanzania’s major highways.
Following the tragedies, Suluhu renewed her appeal to motorists to observe traffic laws and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys.
She emphasised that drivers carry a serious responsibility for protecting passengers and other road users whenever they take to the roads.
The President urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and take the necessary precautions to prevent avoidable accidents.
The Morogoro tragedies come amid wider concerns about road safety in East Africa, where fatal collisions continue to claim lives and leave families devastated.
Suluhu’s message serves as a reminder that responsible driving, proper vehicle maintenance and strict enforcement of traffic laws remain essential in preventing similar tragedies.
As Tanzania mourns the 32 victims, attention is expected to remain on investigations into the accidents and measures authorities can take to reduce road deaths.
The immediate priority remains supporting bereaved families, caring for survivors and ensuring that the circumstances surrounding both crashes are fully established.
