Ghana Police have reported the detention of suspects in a series of armed robberies in Buipe, Tamale and Mion, as well as in an attack on the Accra—Kumasi highway and suspected illegal arms trading. The operations were part of seven major breakthroughs following several weeks of coordinated intelligence work, MyJoyOnline reports.
Robberies in the north of the country
According to Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate detained three people: Yakubu Umar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus and Abdul Rahman Haruna, known as Saaga. Police suspect them of involvement in a gang that operated on the Fumbisi—Yagaba road and possessed two AK-47 rifles and a pump-action shotgun.
According to police, members of the group sold stolen motorcycles to contacts in Tamale and Savelugu. The detainees are also suspected of the robbery and murder of a mobile money service vendor in Fofulso near the Damango junction, committed earlier in 2026. They are in police custody, while law enforcement officers are searching for other possible accomplices and weapons.
Separately, police reported the death of 60-year-old Alhaji Imoro Beliko, who is considered the likely organizer of a robbery and murder at the Buipe cattle market. According to police, on June 29, 2026, attackers targeted two mobile money service vendors at the market in the Savannah Region and stole 430,000 Ghanaian cedis. Beliko, who also traded at the market, was suspected of hiring robbers and supplying them with weapons.

On September 5, 2026, police received information about his whereabouts and placed him under surveillance. As Yohuno stated, the man attempted to flee, was wounded by gunfire and later died from his injuries. During the initial investigation, 28-year-old Yakubu Umar was detained, and police seized a pump-action shotgun, five BB cartridges and a single-barrel gun that investigators believe may have been used in the attack.
Weapons and attack on the Accra—Kumasi highway
Police also detained Obotan, whom they consider the leader of a group linked to a robbery on the Anyiresi—Sekyere section of the Accra—Kumasi highway on August 18, 2026. Those detained include his mother, who is suspected of concealing weapons, as well as suspected arms supplier Issaka Napson, Issaka Majid and Majid Huzeifa. A 14-year-old teenager, who according to police acted as a lookout, was also detained.
During searches, police said they seized pump-action, double-barrel and single-barrel shotguns, a locally made pistol, ammunition, machetes, handcuffs, knives, pepper spray, a tactical vest and an unregistered Royal 125 motorcycle. Another suspect named Tanko is being sought.
In another case involving suspected firearms trafficking, police detained five people in June and July 2026. According to police, the Accra Circuit Court remanded them in custody, and a hearing in the case was scheduled for September 8. Law enforcement officers said they seized eight AK-47 rifles, one submachine gun and two foreign-made pistols.
