Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called for a united opposition, saying Kenya needs to strengthen constitutionalism and good governance.
Kalonzo said the opposition would continue working to build a broader political movement to advance what he described as the principles of the Constitution and the rule of law.
“Kenya is headed in the wrong direction, and we have a responsibility to change course,” Kalonzo said.
He spoke after chairing a joint Azimio Council and National Executive Committee meeting, where opposition leaders discussed efforts to strengthen their cooperation.
Kalonzo said the opposition’s commitment to constitutionalism also covered the treatment of foreign nationals living and working in Kenya.
He said Burundian nationals in Kenya should be treated with dignity as members of the East African Community.
“Our brothers and sisters from Burundi are part of the East African Community, and they deserve dignity, not suspicion,” he said.
The Wiper leader said Kenya should maintain good relations with its neighbours and uphold the principles of regional integration.
“Kenya must remain a good neighbour and honour the spirit of East African integration,” Kalonzo said.
His remarks came amid attention on the status of foreign nationals operating businesses in Kenya after President William Ruto directed that certain small-scale enterprises be reserved for Kenyan citizens.
The government has given foreign nationals a 90-day window to regularise their immigration, work permit, business registration and licensing status.
Kalonzo said government actions concerning foreign nationals should respect their rights and dignity.
He also spoke about a planned Linda Mwananchi opposition gathering scheduled for Sunday, saying the opposition would defend the constitutional right of Kenyans to peacefully assemble, associate and express themselves.
“Every Kenyan has a constitutional right to assemble, associate and express themselves peacefully, a right we will defend,” he said.
Kalonzo said restoring constitutionalism should include protecting the rights of everyone within the country, regardless of nationality.
“Restoring Kenya to constitutionalism means restoring dignity to everyone within her borders,” Kalonzo said.
The meeting comes as opposition parties seek to consolidate their political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo said the Azimio leadership would continue working towards a stronger and more united opposition focused on governance, constitutionalism and the rule of law.
He said the opposition’s objective was to ensure that constitutional rights remained protected and that political competition was conducted peacefully.
