Eni, Vitol move closer to finalising petroleum agreements for two Ghanaian blocks

Eni Ghana and its partner, Vitol Upstream Tano Limited, have signed two Memoranda of Understanding with the Government of Ghana covering offshore blocks GH WB 3 and GH WB 8 in the Tano Basin, in a move that paves the way for the finalisation of Petroleum Agreements for the two concessions.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Honourable John Jinapor, signed the agreements on behalf of the Government of Ghana, with executives from the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation witnessing the ceremony.

The signing, which took place in Accra on Thursday, September 10, 2026, marks a significant step forward in Ghana’s quest to expand its upstream petroleum sector.

The two blocks span an area of approximately 2,100 square kilometres, with water depths ranging from 750 to 2,800 metres. According to the company, the opportunities presented by the blocks align with Eni’s near-field and Infrastructure-Led Exploration strategy, which seeks to leverage existing infrastructure and the proximity of established producing areas to unlock the potential of prospective zones.

The latest agreements follow the signing of a Memorandum of Intent last year, signalling a further consolidation of Eni’s long-term commitment to responsible investment and exploration in Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry.

The company pledged to support the effective management and development of the country’s petroleum resources in line with Ghana’s legal and regulatory framework.

Eni has maintained a presence in Ghana since 2009, undertaking offshore hydrocarbon exploration and production activities. The company currently holds an equity production of approximately 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

It operates the Offshore Cape Three Points project with a 44.4 per cent stake, in partnership with Vitol, which holds 35.6 per cent, and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, which controls the remaining 20 per cent.

Beyond its core operational activities, the joint venture’s portfolio includes initiatives in training, economic diversification, access to water and sanitation, and access to energy, reflecting a broader commitment to community development and sustainable investment in the communities where it operates.
