The Ghana Police Service has recorded major breakthroughs in its nationwide fight against armed robbery, with several suspected criminals arrested and a cache of weapons and ammunition recovered.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, announced the development at a press briefing at the National Police Headquarters on Monday, September 7, 2026.

According to the IGP, the latest operations followed weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated operations targeting criminal gangs in the Greater Accra, Western, Northern and Savannah Regions.

Among the breakthroughs is the arrest of 32-year-old Abraham Awundok, who is accused of murdering the missing couple Dr. Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amuah Esi.

The couple was reported missing in April 2026, and subsequent investigations led to the recovery of their remains.

Police say Awundok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, allegedly murdered them, stole their money, mobile phones and vehicle before fleeing to the United Arab Emirates.

He was later declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice and deported from Dubai to Ghana on August 30.

The IGP said the suspect admitted to the killings during interrogation, while the couple’s vehicle has also been recovered.

Bank robbery syndicate busted
The Police also foiled an alleged robbery operation targeting banks and customers in Accra and Tema.

The syndicate is accused of monitoring bank customers who withdrew large sums of money before following and attacking them.

Police investigations linked the group to the robbery of a woman at Agbamaame in Tema Community 2, where GH¢50,000 was allegedly stolen.

The gang was also reportedly involved in an attack on a man at Achimota.

On August 13, police surveillance teams tracked the suspects from Spintex to Labone and Cantonments, where they allegedly positioned themselves near several banks, including Zenith Bank, GCB Bank and Ecobank.

A police intervention foiled the planned attack

Two suspects were shot dead, one escaped, while 49-year-old Augustine Okechuku Maazi was arrested.

Police recovered a Blow F90 pistol and 13 different vehicle registration numbers from a Toyota Highlander allegedly used by the gang.

Three AK-47s and 357 rounds were recovered

In another major operation, police dismantled a robbery gang operating across Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp and the Manso enclave.

Five suspects were arrested while another suspect, identified as Seidu Salifu, died during the operation.

Police recovered three AK-47 assault rifles, five magazines, 357 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and two vehicles.

The gang is suspected of targeting gold dealers, mining sites and communities.

Police also arrested suspects linked to the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer, Seth Kobina, at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta.

Two locally manufactured pistols, five live BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses were recovered.

Northern Region robbery suspects arrested

In the Northern Region, three suspects—Yacouba Oumar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus and Abdul Rahman Haruna alias “Saaga”—were arrested over a series of armed robbery incidents in Buipe, Tamale and Mion.

Police say the gang allegedly operated with two AK-47 rifles and a pump-action gun and was involved in robberies along the Fumbisi-Yagaba road.

The suspects are also accused of selling stolen motorbikes to contacts in Tamale and Savelugu.

The IGP assured Ghanaians that the Police Service would continue with intelligence-led operations to dismantle criminal networks and make the country safer.

“We remain committed to taking the fight to the criminals and making life uncomfortable for criminal syndicates,” Mr. Yohuno said.
