Notts lose Verreynne to South Africa for final games

County champions Nottinghamshire have been dealt a blow by losing wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne for their last three games, following his call-up by South Africa.

Along with several other South Africans currently playing in England, the 29-year-old has been recalled home for the forthcoming visit of Australia.

The three-match Test series with the Aussies does not begin until 9 October, 12 days after the County Championship season finishes – but there are also three one-day internationals prior to that.

Verreynne had signed to play all of Nottinghamshire’s Championship matches this summer – but the terms of his central contract with his home governing body take precedence.

Notts, who sit in second place, four points behind leaders Somerset and a point ahead of third-placed Warwickshire, will miss the matches against Hampshire, Sussex, and Yorkshire.

“It’s not ideal that we’re losing Kyle at this point in the season,” said Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell.

“But we understand the decision made by Cricket South Africa.

“We’ve been very happy to have Kyle with us for most of the summer, during which his contributions have put us in a strong position as we head towards the final few matches.

“We hope to confirm a replacement for Kyle as soon as we’re able to.”
