Three ANC representatives omitted from South African election lists

In South Africa, the names of several prominent ANC representatives, including Frank Chikane, Andile Lungisa and Noxolo Mafu, were not included on the party’s proportional representation election lists. This occurred amid problems during candidate registration with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), TimesLIVE reports.

Mayoral candidates

Chikane, a veteran of the ANC and public administration, was identified by the party as its answer to Helen Zille and the Democratic Alliance’s campaign for the position of Johannesburg mayor. Lungisa hoped to return to the Nelson Mandela Bay council as the ANC’s mayoral candidate.

Mafu, the deputy minister of sports, arts and culture, recently became one of four candidates being considered for the position of Buffalo City mayor. According to the publication, this is the only metropolitan municipality that the ANC still fully controls.

Electoral Commission data

The IEC confirmed this week that 2,274 nominations from 45 parties had been entered into its system, but the respective parties had not formally submitted them. The commission denied that the cause could have been a technical malfunction claimed by the ANC.

ANC leadership is downplaying the scale of the problem and says that mayoral candidates whose names were accidentally omitted from the lists can still be added when the IEC reopens the amendment procedure.

According to TimesLIVE, the Eastern Cape province may have been affected the most: the problems impacted candidates in the OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo district municipalities, as well as the Sundays River Valley and Walter Sisulu local municipalities. In Port St Johns, the ANC did not submit the names of 20 ward councillor candidates and 19 proportional representation candidates. In KwaZulu-Natal, the party, according to the publication, did not nominate candidates in the uMshwathi municipality.
