President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerians that political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections will not disrupt the legislative duties of members of the National Assembly.
Akpabio gave the assurance while speaking with journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, shortly after attending a meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) critical stakeholders in Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District.
At the meeting, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Akpabio and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, received unanimous endorsements for their respective bids to return to office in 2027.
According to a statement issued by Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, and made available to journalists, the Senate President said electioneering and legislative responsibilities were distinct activities that could be effectively managed without one interfering with the other.
He said lawmakers were elected to serve four-year terms and would continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities throughout their tenure.
“We are elected for four years, and we are going to work for four years. Anybody that is walking on the tightrope must be able to do the balancing act. We are politicians and campaigns would start very soon.
“Campaigns can be fixed in the afternoons or evenings while we do our work in the mornings.”
Akpabio maintained that the commencement of political campaigns would not affect the ability of the National Assembly to make laws and address the needs of Nigerians.
He noted that lawmakers belonged to different political parties and, therefore, would not all be engaged in campaign activities at the same time.
“It is not a problem at all. It is not everybody that will go for campaign at the same time because we belong to different political parties. Nothing will affect legislation.
“We will continue to make laws to take care of the needs of the people. It has never affected the work of the parliament,” he stressed.
The Senate President’s comments come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum, with politicians and political parties already beginning to position themselves for the elections.
