KANO — Kano was thrown into mourning over the weekend after three sisters drowned when their canoe capsized on Tiga Dam in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of the state.

What began as an ordinary Saturday afternoon ended in unimaginable heartbreak for one family, as the three girls left home together but never returned.

The victims were identified as Murjanatu, Atikatu and Bilkisu, popularly known as Amira, all daughters of the same household in Yalwan Rugu-Rugu community.

Family members who spoke on the incident revealed that the tragedy occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Saturday when the canoe carrying the girls overturned on the dam.

He said the helpless sisters drowned before help could reach them on the multipurpose dam.

Confirming the incident, the Chairperson of Tudun Wada Local Government and Chair of the Kano State Association of Local Government Chairpersons, Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu Soja Maijama’a, described the accident as a devastating loss to the family and the community.

“We share the pain of the bereaved family and pray that Almighty Allah forgives the deceased, grants them Aljannatul Firdaus, and gives their loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss,” she said.

Residents of Yalwan Rugu-Rugu have since been gripped by grief, with neighbours and sympathisers mourning the loss of three sisters whose lives were cut short in a single tragic accident.

As of press time, no official statement had been issued by emergency or marine safety authorities on the cause of the canoe capsize.
