Kenya and South Africa are seeking to expand and diversify trade and investment between the two countries, with a focus on creating jobs and opening opportunities for businesses and young people.

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi held bilateral talks with South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola on the sidelines of the AU Extraordinary Summit in Luanda.

The two ministers discussed improving market access, facilitating investment and increasing the value and volume of commerce between Kenya and South Africa.

Mudavadi said stronger trade between African countries should translate into jobs, business growth and new opportunities for citizens.

“Trade between African nations should do more than move goods across borders, it should create jobs, grow businesses and open new opportunities for our people,” he said.

Mudavadi also invited South Africa to participate in the AU Extraordinary Summit on Local Manufacturing of Pharmaceutical and Non-Pharmaceutical Commodities, which Kenya will host in Nairobi in December.

He said Kenya and South Africa share a deep history of solidarity and Pan-Africanism, adding that the focus should now be on turning the longstanding partnership into greater trade, investment, and shared prosperity.
