Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda… Can small modular reactors bring nuclear power to Africa?

With grid capacity and cost a barrier to installing conventional nuclear reactors, many African countries are looking to small modular reactors (SMRs) to serve an exponential growth in power demand.

Nuclear power is back in favour. More than 60 years after ceasing all nuclear funding, the World Bank has lifted its restrictions. Under an agreement signed in June 2025 with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Bretton Woods institution is now prepared to “support the safe, secure and responsible use of nuclear energy in developing countries”.
