Ga East Municipal Assembly demolishes unauthorised structures at Haatso

The Ga East Municipal Assembly has intensified its crackdown on illegal developments on waterways, demolishing unauthorised structures at Haatso and its environs as part of efforts to prevent flooding in the municipality.

Municipal Head of Works, Engineer Justin Glover, told Citi News the exercise, directed by the Spatial Planning Committee, targets illegal developments obstructing drainage channels and waterways.

He disclosed that Assembly officials had returned to one site for the fourth time to halt the construction of an unauthorised structure blocking access to a tributary of the Odaw River, stressing that authorities would not allow the development to continue.

Justin Glover warned developers occupying waterways to voluntarily remove their structures or face demolition, noting that the Assembly is determined to prevent a recurrence of flooding in the municipality.

“We are embarking on this exercise to remove all unauthorised structures on waterways and on public rights of way. This is about the fourth time the assembly is here.

“We are advising that anybody who builds on waterways should either remove it themselves, or this time round we are coming at them to make sure that we don’t experience flooding within the municipality.”

The demolition exercise is expected to continue in other affected communities, including Akweteyman.
